ADHD Isn't a Superpower — But There Is a Real Edge

Somewhere between the diagnosis and the first parent support group, someone will tell you that ADHD is a superpower.

They mean well. It is also, said to the wrong parent on the wrong day, one of the more damaging things in the whole conversation — because the parent hearing it has just watched their child lose another afternoon to a worksheet that should have taken twenty minutes, and they know it is not a superpower. So they file the whole speaker under people who do not understand, and stop listening to the parts that were true.

The reverse failure is worse. Say nothing at all, and a child grows up with an exhaustive, well-documented, professionally-endorsed list of everything that is wrong with them and no corresponding list of anything that is right.

There is a true version in between. It is narrower than the slogan, it is smaller than you have been told, and it is considerably more useful than either.

What Researchers Actually Measure

Almost all of the credible work on ADHD and creativity is measuring one specific thing, and it is not "creativity" in the everyday sense. It is divergent thinking: how many different ideas a person can generate from a single starting point.

The standard test is almost comically simple. It is called the Alternate Uses Task, and it asks a question like: what could you use a brick for?

Most people produce about five answers. Build a wall. Prop a door. Break a window. Then they slow down, because the obvious uses are gone and the brick is stubbornly still a brick.

People scoring high on ADHD symptoms tend to keep going. And the answers get stranger — a paperweight for a very large document, a mould for jelly, something to teach a dog to sit still next to.

In a 2022 study of over a thousand people, higher ADHD symptom counts correlated with higher scores on every measure of that task: how many ideas, how varied, how unusual.

Now the Part Nobody Posts

Here is where almost every article on this subject stops, and where this one is going to keep going.

The correlation is 0.17 to 0.22. In plain terms, that means ADHD symptoms explain somewhere around three to five per cent of the difference between people on that task. It is a real effect. It is also a small one, and any individual child may sit anywhere at all within it.

It plateaus. The same study found that ADHD symptoms predict divergent thinking only up to a point, after which more symptoms stop buying more ideas. Whatever is going on, it is not a dial where turning it further up produces a more creative child.

And the link to real-world creative achievement did not hold. The researchers also asked about actual accomplishments — things written, painted, performed, invented. The correlation there was 0.10, and it did not survive correction for multiple testing. In practice that means it is too weak to rely on. It might be real. The data cannot say so.

So: not a superpower. An edge, of modest size, in one specific cognitive skill.

An edge is still worth having. It is just worth being honest about, because a claim a parent can personally disprove by Thursday does not survive contact with a real week.

Why the Overclaim Costs Something

The "superpower" framing tends to arrive attached to a list of famous names — Einstein, da Vinci, various living entrepreneurs. Nearly all of these are retrospective diagnoses of people who died long before the diagnostic criteria existed, or self-reports repeated until they became fact. They are not evidence of anything, and using them puts a genuine finding in the same sentence as folklore.

There is also a quieter cost. If ADHD is a gift, then a child who is drowning has to conclude they are failing at their own gift. That is a heavier thing to hand a ten-year-old than the plain truth, which is that they have a specific difficulty with specific things and one measurable knack, and all three are worth planning around.

What to Actually Do With It

Divergent thinking is a starting skill. It generates options. It does not evaluate them, sequence them, or carry any of them to the end — and the research is clear that ADHD is not associated with an advantage in convergent thinking, the narrowing-down half of the job.

That points at a fairly specific way to use it.

Put them at the front, not the end

  • Let them go first. In a group, once three sensible answers are on the table, everyone converges. A child who generates unusual options is most valuable before that happens, not after.
  • Ask for five wrong answers before the right one. It removes the fear of being wrong, and it is genuinely a divergent-thinking exercise.
  • Ask for a second method, not a neater one. "Is there another way to get there?" uses the strength. "Do it again more carefully" does not.
  • Prefer open questions. Fill-in-the-blank measures the thing they are weakest at and misses the thing they are strongest at.

Then hand them the rails

The ideas arrive. Finishing is the part that needs support, and it needs it structurally rather than motivationally — this is executive function, not character.

  • One next step, written down. Not five. A list of five is a divergent problem again, and they will generate a sixth.
  • A clear end to the session. "Twenty minutes" or "eight cards" finishes. "Until it's done" does not, and the difficulty getting started at all is much worse when the end is invisible.
  • Somewhere to put the idea. A notebook, a voice memo, anything. The idea that has nowhere to go interrupts the task that does.

Twelve started projects is not laziness. It is twelve ideas and no rails.

The Honest Summary

Your child probably does generate more options than the room around them. That is measurable and it is real.

It is also a small effect that plateaus, that does not by itself predict creative achievement, and that sits alongside difficulties which are frequently much larger and more consequential. Both halves are true, and a child is better served by hearing both than by being handed either one alone.
