Your child isn’t ignoring you. They’re still processing.
“I have told you three times.” You did. From the kitchen. Over the tap. With the TV on in the next room. And your child, who can hear a chocolate wrapper from two floors up, looks up and says “what?”
Hearing and listening are two different jobs
Children who can’t follow what you say in a noisy room often have flawless hearing. When researchers test children who have been diagnosed with an auditory processing disorder, their pure-tone hearing thresholds come back normal at every frequency tested. What those children do markedly worse at is picking speech out of background noise, which the authors describe as the main feature of the condition (Sidiras et al., Frontiers in Neuroscience, 2020).
The ear delivers the sound. Pulling your voice out of everything else is a separate job, done later, by the brain. That is the part that runs slow in some children, and it is the part a busy kitchen overwhelms.
What it looks like at home
- Says “what?”, then answers you a beat later
- Follows one instruction out of three
- Fine one-on-one, lost at the dinner table
- Says “I didn’t hear you” and means it
- Watches your face while you talk
That last one is the tell. A child who watches your mouth isn’t being intense. They are using your lips to fill in what the room drowned out.
Noise is the thing that breaks it
Understanding speech in background noise is the skill that goes first. In a quiet room, comprehension holds up. Add a TV, a sibling, a ceiling fan, and the words stop separating from everything behind them. Your voice doesn’t get quieter. It gets buried.
A quick word on diagnosis, because this is where the internet gets unhelpful. A formal auditory processing disorder is rare. One large study of school-aged children in the United States found it in about two children per thousand, and the same paper points to a large UK study that found around half a percent (Nagao et al., Journal of the American Academy of Audiology, 2016). The authors describe what it looks like: children who have difficulty understanding speech, especially in poor listening environments, despite normal hearing on the audiogram.
So the odds are your child does not have a diagnosable disorder, and this post is not going to tell you they do. But losing a parent’s voice to a noisy room is not rare at all. The mechanism is true far more widely than the diagnosis is, and the fixes below cost nothing to try.
Cut the noise before you speak
- Turn the TV off. Not down. Off.
- Be in the room. Not the doorway, not upstairs.
- Wait until they look at you, then start.
- Say it once, at a normal volume.
Shouting from the kitchen feels like it should help. It adds a second noise source and zero information. Walk the ten steps. It is faster than saying it three times.
One instruction. Then be quiet.
“Shoes on.” Stop. Wait. Give step two only after step one has landed. “Go up, brush your teeth, grab your bag and clear your plate” is four instructions in a trench coat, and a child who is still separating your voice from the fan will catch one of them, usually the last.
The silence afterwards is the processing. Don’t fill it. And when you want to check it went in, ask them to say it back rather than asking “do you understand?” Every child on earth answers yes to that one.
None of this makes you a softer parent. You are saying the same thing, once, in a way that can actually arrive.
